The way we were
16 July 2007I like to think that I belong to the last generation of a now rapidly disappearing “old” India. A country where we had one model of car on the streets and one, perhaps two hours of TV a day. My family had its first black and white TV as late as 1985. I would wait at 6PM for the spinning moon to appear on TV, a daily event of monumental importance which told us that the TV tower, owned by the sole broadcaster had started broadcasting. It was the best time of my life. TV still had some enigma, some “meaning” to it. The spinning moon even carried the words “Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram” on it… Truth, Goodness and Beauty… and in our ignorance, we were captivated by these abstractions, pouring in as fuzzy images on those pot bellied glass tubes. We didn’t know how “backward” we were.. we were ignorant, poor and happy.
Sometimes, they would broadcast this.
I don’t suppose we live in a world where this has any meaning anymore. Things that used to stir deep within, now no longer do.
And I no longer know what I prefer anymore.
